Is it true that my fish will only grow to the size of its aquarium?

One of the more common myths about fish-keeping is that a fish will only grow to the size of the aquarium it is kept in. This mis-information likely started with Goldfish kept in bowls that did not seem to grow even though some achieved a life-span of several years (still a short life for a Goldfish). Somehow, this thinking then transferred into keeping tropical fish in aquariums and has remained in our lexicon ever since.
